This weekend an alternative fashion market will be taking up
residence in Hackney. The Ram Place Fashion Market draws inspiration from the
Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition currently showing at the Barbican Centre, and
will attempt to recreate some of the spark from the enfant terrible’s career. It's a pop-up partnership with Create, developed in collaboration with i-D Magazine.
Artists, designers, performers and traders will work
together to celebrate everything that’s new and exciting about East London
fashion and art. Alongside the stalls, where you can browse work by established
and upcoming names, there’ll be street food and a schedule of performances,
gigs, workshops and talks.
On Saturday 12th July, the opening day of the
event, Lyall Hakaria will be unveiling VOGUE GOES ROGUE – a procession of “fashion
totems” from the Barbican Centre to the market at Ram Place, and Kirsty
Kirkpatrick will be running DIY jewellery workshops. There’ll also be lessons
in fashion photography from Gisele Torres and a discussion on fashion, image
and race hosted by Tansy Hosking, Caryn Franklin and Jody Furlong.
Oene thing we’re really excited about seeing, though, has to
be The Vivisector recreation of a Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture dress in
living plants and moss. Here at the Style Forecaster blog we’re all about the
exploration of new mediums and looking at fashion in a different way, and
Gaultier’s legacy is all about pushing boundaries.
His designs have always been
influenced by the multicultural societies of Paris and London, and a deep
understanding of youth culture, so this pop-up market is a fitting tribute to
his work and the Barbican Centre’s exhibition. If you haven’t caught it yet, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is the
largest Gaultier retrospective ever staged, and is well worth a visit.
But make sure you head to Hackney as soon as you can: Ram
Place Market arrives this weekend and is only scheduled to run for nine days.
